Members of the “Central Park Five” are suing Donald Trump for statements he made about the gang during a recent presidential debate with Kamala Harris.
During the event, Harris discussed Trump’s previous contentious stances on Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Antron Brown, and Korey Wise. She said that in 1989, he placed a full-page advertisement in many newspapers asking for their death. In response, Trump said, “They admitted — they said they pled guilty.” And I answered, “Well, if they plead guilty, they will have seriously injured or killed someone.”
The group’s attorneys said that the statements indicated the former President’s “reckless disregard” for the truth. “Defendant Trump’s statements were false and defamatory in numerous respects,” lawyers representing the men stated, as reported by CNN. “The plaintiffs never pleaded guilty to the Central Park attacks. Plaintiffs all pleaded not guilty and maintained their innocence throughout the trial, imprisonment, and release from jail.” They added: “None of the victims of the Central Park assaults were killed.”

The “Central Park Five” were notoriously convicted of assaulting and raping Trisha Meili in 1989, and they all spent time in jail until serial rapist Matias Reyes confessed years later. The convictions of all five were later overturned. The case became a high-profile example of racial profiling, prejudice, and unfairness in the justice system.
The complaint comes after Trump made waves in Pennsylvania on Sunday for working a shift at McDonald’s. The event generated multiple viral moments on social media and concluded with Trump professing renewed admiration for service workers. Despite this, he avoided answering questions regarding increasing the minimum wage. “These individuals work hard. “They’re fantastic,” he remarked. “I just saw something… a beautiful process,” he added.
