A Colorado teenager was shot in the face by a town council member while attempting to ask the official’s girlfriend for permission to take homecoming photos on her property, according to police.

The 17-year-old boy told investigators that he and a friend crossed the fence at a residence in Conifer, about 30 miles southwest of Denver, and strolled up the driveway on Tuesday, hoping to speak with the homeowner about using their property for homecoming photos, according to the Colorado Sun.

When they were unable to locate the homeowner, they went to their car and began drafting a note inquiring about renting the property for a photoshoot.

Moments later, a truck drew up beside them on the road. Brent Metz, 38, the car’s driver, came out and shot at the boys through the windshield, striking one of them in the face, according to a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office release.

Metz, the homeowner’s boyfriend and a member of the Mountain View Town Council, was summoned to the home by his girlfriend, who was not present but noticed the teens on her surveillance system, according to the station.

Officers discovered a message written by the youngsters on the site, which confirmed their claim, CBS News reports.

According to an arrest report acquired by CBS, the boy did not believe Metz had shot him maliciously.

The teen “heard the driver (Brent) say ‘Oh s-t, my gun went off,'” according to the arrest report.

He allegedly told officials that Metz attempted to help after firing the cartridge, but the other youngster, who is 15 and a childhood friend of the victim, pushed him away and “asked why he shot his friend.”

Officers discovered Metz’s rifle inside his truck and found him standing near to the boys when they arrived, according to the release.

The sheriff’s department did not specify which type of gun was used in the incident.

He was arrested and booked into jail on accusations of first-degree assault, criminal threats, unlawful firearm discharge, and reckless endangerment.

According to police, the teen remained in the hospital as of Wednesday.
