Over a decade after Apple acquired Siri, it is getting a major improvement.
For months, it was reported that the tech titan was in talks with OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT, about merging the chatbot and virtual assistant with Siri – and their collaboration has now been confirmed.
The exciting news was unveiled at the 2024 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference today (Monday, June 10), with ChatGPT slated to be included in Apple’s iOS 18 upgrade, which will be available later this year at no further cost to users.
In addition to iPhones, the update will be available for iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia.
As part of the announcement, Apple stated that user inquiries will not be logged and that ChatGPT will be integrated into its devices’ systemwide writing capabilities, The Verge writes.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also announced the new collaboration, saying: “We’re excited to partner with Apple to bring ChatGPT to their users in a new way.”
“Apple shares our commitment to safety and innovation, and this partnership aligns with OpenAI’s mission to make advanced AI accessible to everyone.”

However, ChatGPT is not intended to be the only AI available for Apple devices. While it will be the first, 9to5Mac reports that Apple aims to add more AI assistants, such as Google Gemini, in the future.
Meanwhile, tech lovers are ecstatic that the company has partnered with OpenAI.
Speaking before of today’s WWDC presentation, industry expert Ben Wood, chief analyst at CCS Insight, stated, “I’ve been using the ChatGPT voice interface, and its interpretation of queries and requests is the best I’ve seen so far.
“If Apple has signed a deal to integrate GPT-4o with Siri, it could deliver a remarkable transformation in Siri’s performance — and emerge as arguably the biggest story from the event.”
He went on to say, “This feels like a momentous WWDC.”
According to Mashable, some examples of what iPhone users may anticipate ChatGPT to bring to iOS 18 include asking Siri for cooking ideas from a list of ingredients, getting backyard landscaping advise using GPT-4o’s image recognition, and utilizing Compose to write bedtime stories.
Elsewhere at WWDC, it was announced that the Apple Vision Pro headset would be available in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world next month.
The Vision Pro will go on sale in the UK on July 12 for £3,499, and will also be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, and Singapore as part of the new rollout.
