A man with a remarkable 86 percent success rate in forecasting the future predicts that by 2030, we will have attained immortality.

In terms of the future, some people’s theories are more plausible than others.

Baba Vanga is one who instantly comes to mind, with some of her terrible 2024 predictions coming true only four months into the year.

Futurists are a group of persons who are expected to have a solid track record for predicting what will happen in the future.

That is someone who uses their studies to make predictions about the future based on current events.

Ray Kurzweil, a computer scientist and futurist, has some quite detailed dates for the future, including when humans will reach immortality.

Kurzweil has a good track record of making forecasts regarding technology, including correctly predicting in 1990 that a computer would beat human world chess champions by the year 2000.

The futurist also foresaw the emergence of portable computers and cellphones, the shift to more wireless technology, and the mainstreaming of the internet, all of which would have surprised the ordinary Joe.

But, as you might imagine, Kurzweil does not get everything right, as he earlier claimed that self-driving cars will be in use by 2009.

Some 14 years ago, the futurist evaluated his own projections from the previous 20 years.

To say he was quite successful is an understatement.

Kurzweil claimed that after making 147 forecasts throughout that time, 115 of them were ‘completely true’.

15 of the forecasts were considered to be ‘basically true’, with only three being utterly incorrect.

That’s really good going.

Perhaps one of Kurzweil’s most audacious claims is that humans will achieve immortality by 2030.

And if this forecast is correct, you’ll only need to wait six years to have a chance at living forever.

Yes, the prognosis sounds ambitious, but given Kurzweil’s track record, we shouldn’t ignore it outright.

On the Lex Fridman Podcast, the futurist stated that by 2030, we will be able to ‘increase human life expectancy’ by’more than a year every year’.

He stated that humanity would soon reach ‘longevity escape velocity’, and that ‘youth today or even people in their 20s or 30s’ may have a chance at eternal life.

In a separate 2017 interview with Futurism, Kurzweil stated that “2029 is the consistent date I have predicted for when an AI will pass a valid Turing test and thus achieve human levels of intelligence.”.

“I have set the date 2045 for the ‘Singularity’ which is when we will multiply our effective intelligence a billion fold by merging with the intelligence we have created.”
