Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King’s youngest son, Dexter Scott King, passed away at the age of sixty-two.
He lost his fight with prostate cancer on January 22, according to the King Center. The civil rights luminaries had three children, including him.
Martin Luther King III, his brother, said that the news came as a surprise. “The abrupt shock is terrible. Finding the appropriate words in a situation like this is difficult. He stated, “We ask for your prayers at this time for the King family as a whole,” according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
His sister, Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King, who serves as CEO of The King Center, continued, “It is impossible to put into words the anguish I feel over losing another sibling. I’m praying for the fortitude to get through this really trying moment.
“He transitioned peacefully in his sleep at home with me in Malibu,” according to Leah Weber King, his wife of 11 years and best friend of 21 years. “He fought this horrible illness to the very end, giving it everything he had.” He overcame this obstacle with the same bravery and strength as all of his other trials in life.

Born on January 30, 1961, Dexter Scott King was raised in Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church. In 1968, his father was slain in Memphis, Tennessee, when he was just seven years old. Dexter graduated from Morehouse College after attending Frederick Douglas High School.
Dexter held the positions of President of the King Estate and Chairman of The King Center. He fought to uphold and safeguard his father’s legacy as well as the intellectual property (IP) his parents left behind, becoming well-versed in intellectual property law.
