Contestants on American Idol seemed surprised to hear that Jelly Roll would serve as the program’s first-ever “artist in residence” and assist them during the competition.

A video from American Idol that was posted on the program’s social media pages on Sunday night (April 6) shows the judges introducing Jelly Roll to the group of Idol contestants as the artist in residence. “We [Richie, Luke Bryan, and Carrie Underwood] thought we would bring in a little extra support,” Lionel Richie clarified. He will accompany us throughout the season to help you deal with the highs and lows of what you are about to experience. Roll, Jelly!

When the hitmaker from Beautifully Broken entered the room, the competitors clapped and applauded. “I’m glad to be a part of the Idol family the rest of the season,” Jelly Roll stated. The artist in residence will “assist our Idols in preparing for the first-ever Head-to-Head Round,” which is scheduled to premiere on Monday, April 7, at 8 p.m. ET/7 p.m. CT, according to American Idol. ABC broadcasts the program, and Hulu streams it.

Earlier this year, Jelly Roll was announced as the artist in residence. In the past, the current iHeartRadio Music Awards Country Artist of the Year has both performed on stage and served as a guest mentor on the show. “I’m honored to be Idol’s first-ever ARTIST IN RESIDENCE—mentoring with heart, soul, and real experience,” Jelly Roll declared at the time.
