In an effort to facilitate the editing of short-form videos, YouTube is introducing new tools to Shorts. According to YouTube’s release, five new tools are “coming this spring.”

One of these is a redesigned video editor that offers editing capabilities comparable to those already available on rival sites like TikTok and Reels.

Adjustments such as chopping and reordering clips, zooming into film, and overlaying text and music may be made from an editing timeline view in the new video editor. By sliding up from the bottom of the Shorts editor, creators may reach this timeline view, where they can preview the edited short. According to YouTube, these new features are the “first of more improvements” planned to assist make editing shorts easier.

By enabling producers to select a song and having their video clips automatically synchronize to the beat rather than requiring them to manually align with a beat, YouTube is simplifying the process of adding music to Shorts. Shorts templates will also provide effects like overlays and video filters, which will speed up the process of catching viral trends.

YouTube says that in addition to text-to-image AI-generated sticker creation, you will be able to add image stickers straight from your gallery into Shorts “later this spring.” More customizing choices are available to artists as users can define the sticker they wish to put to their film.

YouTube Shorts has already begun to tally views from the moment a video is played and includes artificial voiceovers, so this isn’t the first round of TikTok-style improvements to be released. Although Shorts makers aren’t currently able to use these new features, YouTube’s announcement is most likely not coincidental. The new Shorts features will make TikTok more recognizable and enticing to creators who might soon be searching for a new platform, especially as the Saturday deadline to find a US buyer or face being banned in the US draws near.
