David Lynch, the famed “Twin Peaks” creator, has died, according to his family, who wrote on Facebook.
The post reads: “It is with great sadness that we, his family, announce the death of the man and artist, David Lynch. We’d prefer some privacy at this time. There is a huge void in the world now that he is no longer among us. However, as he would say, “keep your eye on the donut and not the hole.”
He disclosed just last year that he had been diagnosed with emphysema after years of smoking and would most likely be unable to direct or leave his home.
Lynch began filmmaking in the late 1960s, and gained national prominence in 1977 with the surrealist horror picture “Eraserhead.”
Lynch’s career accelerated in the 1980s, with the release of “The Elephant Man” and “Dune.”
Lynch was 78.
