43.15 million Americans watched the vice presidential debate between Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota and Sen. JD Vance of Ohio on Tuesday night.

The discussion on Tuesday night was a return to a time when debates featured protracted arguments over policy positions. It was a rare display of civility in the current political atmosphere.

The vice presidential debate between then-Senator Kamala Harris and Vice President Mike Pence in 2020 drew approximately 58 million viewers; by comparison, the ratings for the 2024 debate were 25% lower.

Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET, the discussion, which was emceed by CBS News, was streamed live on over a dozen major broadcast and cable networks.

9.6 million people watched CBS News, more than any other news source. Fox News (7.9 million), ABC (6.3 million), NBC (5.6 million), MSNBC (4.8 million), CNN (3.3 million), and Fox (2.5 million) were the next most popular.

The great majority of television watchers were above 55, as is the case with most live political events in the modern era.

The presidential debate on Tuesday is most likely the final one of the campaign.

In the past, vice presidential contenders have debated once and presidential candidates have faced off three times before the general election.

It has been said by the former president Donald Trump that he will not take part in another debate with Vice President Harris.
What to observe: This election cycle was the first in which none of the general-election debates were hosted by the Commission on President Debates. Its future is still unknown in an extremely politicized political environment.
