Drew Brees, the retired quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, is that perfect coach. After retirement, Brees worked as a commentator on NBC before joining Purdue as an interim assistant coach in 2022. He now leads his son’s seven-on-seven squad. He has been around the game since retiring, and even while he played, he had command of the offense and played with a coach’s attitude, making his move to coaching the Saints seamless, not to mention that he knows the squad exceptionally well.
Brees spent 15 of his 20-season career with the Saints. During his time in New Orleans, he was selected to 13 Pro Bowls and won the Offensive Player of the Year award twice. In seven seasons, he was also the NFL’s top passer. Most importantly, he helped the Saints win their first Super Bowl title.

Brees understands the culture required for a championship-caliber club and will command respect from the moment he takes over as coach of the Saints. With the Derek Carr era coming to an end, New Orleans is likewise seeking for a franchise quarterback, and Brees would be a perfect candidate to help modernize the offense and help the future youngster adjust.
It all comes down to culture and having someone who can immediately bring a spark to the Saints, who need one after the last few seasons. In a wide-open NFC South, there is no better candidate to be the Saints’ future head coach than Drew Brees, who understands the division and has the ability to completely transform the narrative around the Saints.
