Stop me if this sounds familiar. You’ve planned the perfect video shoot, you have the best audio track playing in the background, you launch the Camera app on your iPhone, and you begin recording…and then the music stops.

You’ve once again forgotten that the iPhone does not support audio playback while taking video using the Camera app.

It makes sense in some situations—presumably when you want the video to record environmental sounds—but in others, you just want to shoot the video with an audio track as the background in the simplest way possible.

You can now do so using the most recent iOS 18 beta (as reported by MacRumors). To activate this, navigate to Settings – Camera – Record Sound and ensure that the “Allow Audio Playback” checkbox is selected.

The results will not be perfect due to the proximity of the iPhone’s speaker to its microphones; I tried it, and the audio in the produced video can be harsh. To achieve the greatest results, you may wish to tone down the audio volume somewhat before beginning your recording.

The functionality is now only available in the iOS 18 beta, but it should be available to all when the final version of iOS 18 is released in the autumn.
