A youth baseball game in North Carolina turned sour this week when an umpire and a coach were so enraged with one another that they got into a violent fight right on the field.

It all happened on Monday in Wilson during a final game between Bull City Little League and Cherryville, two teams with children no older than 12 years old.

During the top of the fifth inning, one of the Cherryville coaches was shown on camera approaching the home plate umpire before the two engaged in a tense face-off. According to accounts, the umpire, named as Robby Beamon, wanted the coach dismissed for cursing.

Footage from the diamond indicates that as the umpire moved away from the dispute, the coach followed him… and then shoved him.

The umpire then used his protective mask as a weapon, violently beating the coach with the gear.

The confrontation lasted many moments… until it was finally interrupted when the umpire was restrained on the ground by fellow coaches.

Police said WRAL News that they were not summoned to the ballpark. David Lee, Wilson Parks and Recreation Director, told local media, “We have no tolerance for this type of behavior.”

“There are a lot of people working hard to make sure our youth are having a positive experience, and it’s just unfortunate and honestly embarrassing that two adults ruined that last night.”

While no arrests were made, both the umpire and coach were suspended after the incident.
