Missy Elliott has joined Universal Pictures’ untitled musical production, which also stars Pharrell Williams, Michel Gondry, Halle Bailey, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and others.

Missy Elliott, a hip-hop and R&B sensation, is the latest musician to join Universal Pictures’ untitled coming-of-age musical, directed by Michel Gondry and produced by Pharrell. So far, details have revealed a plot set in Virginia Beach during the summer of 1977, described as a “coming-of-age musical inspired by the city’s Atlantis Apartments and the neighborhood where Williams grew up.”

Kelvin Harrison Jr. leads an ensemble cast that includes Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Brian Tyree Henry. Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson wrote the script for the film, which will be produced by Williams and Mimi Valdés for i am OTHER and Gil Netter for Gil Netter Productions. Ryan Jones, Senior Vice President of Production Development, and Christine Sun, Director of Production Development, are in charge of the project for Universal.

Missy Elliot made history as the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In addition, she was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2021. Missy Elliott has won four Grammy Awards and sold more than 30 million songs worldwide since her debut in the 1990s.

Though she hasn’t worked in cinema or television much in her career, Elliott can be seen in Fox’s “Star,” the dance-themed feature “Honey” alongside Jessica Alba, and documentaries like “Fade to Black” about Jay-Z’s final show at MSG and the sneaker culture-focused “Just for Kicks.” The new production marks her return to the big screen following her voiced work in the 2004 DreamWorks animated picture “Shark Tale.”

This summer, she embarks on her first headlining tour, Out Of This World — The Missy Elliott Experience, which will take her to 24 locations, performing alongside longtime collaborators Busta Rhymes, Ciara, and Timbaland. She is represented by Mona Scott-Young of Monami Management and Singh, Singh & Trauben.
