Jim Carrey is coming out of retirement to play a new role, and fans are quite enthusiastic.

It’s official: Carrey will return one of his most beloved cinematic roles at the end of the year.

Carrey has been one of Hollywood’s most successful actors for nearly four decades.

From Ace Ventura: Pet Detective to Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, and How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Carrey was a familiar face in 1990s movies.

Despite declaring his retirement last fall, Carrey did suggest he might return for certain projects.

Carrey revealed in an interview with Kit Kuvir for Access Hollywood that he planned to retire.

During the conversation, Kuvir informed the actor that singer Dolly Parton had asked him to play her musical collaborator in a biopic.

Carrey replied, “That’s terrific. But I’m retiring.

“I’m saying this really seriously. Unless, of course, the angels suddenly deliver me a script written in golden ink and I realize how vital it is for mankind to see it, I may return.”

Carrey has returned, with Variety announcing that he will reprise his role as Dr Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Now, spoilers ahead, the second film ended with Robotnik actually falling off a massive robot, leaving viewers wondering if he survived the fall.

In a sequence after the credits, viewers learn that Dr Robotnik’s body has not been discovered, which is one indication that he will return.

It will be the third installment in the franchise, following Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which grossed a remarkable $870.8 million at the box office.

Earlier today (February 2), directors teased Carrey’s comeback by releasing a clip from the new film.

Audiences can hear Robotnik’s distinctive cackling.

The video was captioned, “You all thought I was gone, but I’ve just been underground.” “What you’ve seen from me is just a #shadow of things to come.”

People are thrilled at the news, with one saying on X (previously Twitter): “The fact he’s known to rarely do sequels on top just shows how much he loves playing the character.”

Another person stated, “Making children (and adults) laugh and be happy is a great reason to continue your career.” I hope he understands how grateful we are for what he provides to us.

A third said, “I adored Carrey’s performance as Robotnik. “I’m so glad he’s doing the third film.”

The film is scheduled for release on December 20, 2024.
