When it comes to total user minutes, TikTok is outpacing YouTube among the younger demographic (2–18 years old).
According to the report, children spend 60% more time on TikTok than on YouTube. Is it any surprise that YouTube introduced its Shorts option in order to compete?
The media habits of almost 400,000 families and schools were polled for the study, which was carried out by Qustodio, a manufacturer of parental control software. According to the annual report, kids between the ages of 4 and 18 used TikTok for 112 minutes every day in 2023, which is more than the 107 minutes recorded in 2022. Even though YouTube continues to rule the streaming space, TikTok’s short-form video format is becoming more and more popular.

Based on actual usage on desktop and mobile devices, Qustodio’s data delves deeply into a few key markets, including the US, UK, Spain, Australia, and France. As long as they make use of the Qustodio parental control program, it’s a distinctive look at what families and children are doing with their time.
Additionally, according to the research, children watched streaming services for 27% longer in 2023 than they did in 2022. The majority of that viewership seems to have been split between TikTok and YouTube, as Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu all had declines in viewership in 2023—4%, 23%, and 12%, respectively. In the meantime, YouTube and YouTube Kids saw a 14% global growth, which is the greatest amount since Qustodio started gathering data in 2019.

TikTok is by far the most popular social media platform among the younger generation, with 44% of them reporting to use it in some capacity. Unexpectedly, Facebook (38%), X/Twitter (38%), Reddit (32%), Instagram (32%), and Pinterest (31%), were the next most popular social networks. The fascinating thing about X/Twitter is that 38% of younger people started using it after the redesign, which is 30% more than the data from 2022.
In contrast to Instagram (63 minutes), Facebook (19 minutes), Pinterest (16 minutes), X/Twitter (10 minutes), and Reddit (9 minutes), TIkTok usage for this age range was 112 minutes each day. The paper also emphasizes how, because of how much time young people spend playing Roblox, the game has become a significant outreach tool.
Globally, 48% of children used the gaming software Roblox for an average of 130 minutes every day. Following that, the most played games are Magic Tiles 3, Among Us, Clash Royale, Stumble Guys, and Minecraft. Only Roblox among those games has the user-generated content to potentially reach such a large audience.
