Thanks in part to Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biography Maestro, Netflix lead all studios in the Academy Award nominations with a total of 18.
A breakdown of the nominations from Variety showed that Netflix was trailed by Apple Original Films, Searchlight, and Universal, all of which had 13 nominations. With 13 nominations, Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s epic about the development of the nuclear weapon, lead all movies. Emma Stone’s independent hit Poor Things received 11 nominations, while Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon received 10. The complete list of nominees is available here.

The number of nominations signifies again another successful year for Netflix and, together with Apple, demonstrates the caliber of content produced in the streaming space. Netflix had the second-highest number of Oscar nominations in the previous year, only surpassed by A24 and its eventual Oscar winner, Everything Everywhere All at Once. But Netflix has never taken home the best picture prize; Apple, a lesser streaming competitor, will be the first to do it in 2022 with CODA.
Nevertheless, the volume of nominations Netflix has received, including in important categories like Best Picture, demonstrates the range of content the streaming service has to offer. The company’s prestigious works are well recognized, but so are its mass-appealing films and television programs, also known as dumb and fun.
