At the age of 101, renowned comedy writer Norman Lear passed away.

Lear was credited for “revolutionizing American comedy” and was the creative force behind the popular sitcoms All in the Family and Sanford and Son in the 1970s.

Lear produced television shows well into his old years.

A few of his most recent projects were the 2022 Netflix reincarnation of Good Times.

Lear’s family made a statement upon his passing, praising him as a “wonderful husband, father, and grandfather.”

According to Variety, the entire statement said: “We are grateful for the heartfelt expressions of love and support shown in memory of our amazing father, grandfather, and husband.

“Norman led an imaginative, resilient, and compassionate life. He had a great passion for our nation and dedicated his life to upholding its core values of equality and fairness for everyone.

“The best gift of all has been getting to know and love him. As we celebrate and grieve in private for this incredible person, we kindly beg for your understanding.”

Lear received numerous honors during his lengthy career, including two Peabody Awards and six Primetime Emmys.

Lear was well-known for The Jeffersons, Maude, and One Day at a Time in addition to All in the Family and Sanford and Son.

In mourning, people have turned to social media.

Someone wrote on X, saying, “Norman Lear’s shows were brilliant pieces of satire and social commentary.” I regret that he has left.”

Another wrote: “RIP Norman Lear thank you for all the wonderful shows & laughs of my youth.”
