Sherrese Clarke Soares’ investment firm, HarbourView Equity Partners, has revealed its latest acquisition: the “select publishing assets” of country musician Kane Brown.

Although the company bills itself as a “global alternative asset management company” focused on investments in entertainment and media, the two-year-old company appears to have developed a taste for country music, noting that its deal with Kane Brown expands its “already profound footprint in the country music space.”

Since its inception in 2021, the Newark, New Jersey-based company has acquired the publishing catalogs of Grammy-winning country performers Lady A and Brad Paisley, as well as the publisher share of some songs by country duet Florida Georgia Line from Big Loud Mountain Music.

Brown rose to prominence on Facebook in the early 2010s after posting renditions of songs by Alan Jackson, Brantley Gilbert, and Billy Currington, among others. In 2014, he went viral with his tune Don’t Go City On Me, and in 2015, he released an EP, Closer, including the popular song Used To Love You Sober. After signing with RCA Nashville, he released his major label debut, the EP Chapter 1, in 2016.

Brown has firmly established himself in the annals of country music since then, with multiple songs like Homesick, Like I Love Country Music, and Lose It. Two of his successes, One Thing Right and Be Like That, were popular enough to spend five months on the Billboard Hot 100.

Brown has achieved a number of firsts in country music, including being the first singer to top all five Billboard Country charts at the same time and the first male country artist to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards. Five American Music Awards (AMA), five Country Music Television (CMT) awards, and an Academy of Country Music award are among his honors.

“KANE IS A SPECIAL TALENT, AND WE ARE EXCITED TO BE ON THE JOURNEY.” SOARES, SHERRESE CLARKE

“I appreciate Sherrese and HarbourView’s faith in my songwriting catalog.” “These songs I’ve written mean a lot to my fans and my career,” Brown said in a statement.

“Partnering with someone like Kane, who adds such a beautiful texture to the country genre, is consistent with who we are as a firm,” HarbourView CEO Soares added. “Kane is a special talent, and we are excited to be on the journey.”

HarbourView was represented in the transaction by Fox Rothschild LLP, while Brown was represented by Jess L. Rosen of Greenberg Traurig LLP. The transaction’s value was not disclosed.

Soares, the former CEO of acquisition firm Tempo Music Investments, plans to create HarbourView in 2021 with up to $1 billion in funding from Apollo Global Management.

Since then, the asset management organization has built up a portfolio of around 24,000 songs across both master recordings and publication income streams.

This catalog of titles encompasses several eras and genres, much beyond what HarbourView characterizes as its “profound” presence in country music.

In early 2022, it purchased the publishing catalog of Latin music singer Luis Fonsi, of Despacito fame, and this summer, it paid $50 million for a piece of rapper Nelly’s catalog.

It immediately followed that up with the purchase of “select recorded music and publishing assets” from hip hop star Wiz Khalifa. That contract was also worth $50 million, according to TMZ, and gave HarbourView a 50% share in Wiz Khalifa’s entire repertoire.

“I THANK SHERRESE AND HARBOURVIEW FOR BELIEVING IN MY SONGWRITING CATALOG. THESE SONGS I’VE WRITTEN MEAN A LOT TO MY FANS AND MY CAREER.” KANE BROWN’S

Recently, HarbourView reached an agreement with Christine McVie’s estate to buy her part of Fleetwood Mac’s recorded music royalties. McVie’s contributions to the legendary band’s repertoire in the 1970s and 1980s included the songs You Make Loving Fun and Don’t Stop, as well as the piano ballad Songbird.

This fall, HarbourView also purchased a selection of recorded music and publishing rights from rocker Pat Benatar and her music partner and husband Neil Giraldo. The duo has sold over 30 million records worldwide and received four Grammy nominations.

To far, HarbourView has acquired over 45 music collections.
