According to Ukrainian officials, the number of fatalities from a Russian strike on a cafe in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine increased to 52 on Friday.

The larger picture: Since Russia’s unprovoked invasion began, this strike has killed more civilians in Ukraine than any other.

According to a Thursday Telegram message by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the attack was a “completely deliberate act of terrorism.”

Zelensky, who is meeting with European leaders in Spain, stated, “Russia needs these and similar terrorist attacks for one thing: to make its genocidal aggression the new norm for the whole world.”

Details: The strike happened in the town of Hroza on Thursday just after 1:00 p.m. local time.

Gov. Oleh Synehubov of Kharkiv stated in a Telegram post early on Thursday that a 6-year-old boy was one of the deceased.

In a later tweet, he added, the death toll made the strike the “bloodiest crime” committed by Russia in the Kharkiv region since the beginning of the invasion.

In a Telegram post, the Prosecutor General’s office for Ukraine stated that seven more individuals were initially injured in the incident; one of them later passed away in the hospital from their wounds.

52 people have died and six more have been injured, according to Synehubov, who verified the number in a Telegram post on Friday.
Russia refuted claims that it had attacked civilians in Ukraine.

When questioned about the attack on Hroza on Friday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said to reporters, “We continue to repeat: the Russian military does not strike civilian targets,” according to Russian state news agency TASS.
According to Peskov, Russia only attacks “places where military personnel gather.”

Even as more Republicans have expressed disapproval, the Biden administration has attempted to reassure anxious friends that military assistance will continue.

A government stopgap budget bill this weekend noticeably excluded additional help for Ukraine’s defense.

President Biden told reporters on Wednesday that he was concerned about how internal Republican divisions would affect funding to Ukraine.

According to the Wall Street Journal, European leaders are concerned that if U.S. help declines, they might not be able to completely close the gap in military and financial support.
