TikTok, which is well-known for generating trends and providing a large platform for people to showcase their creative material, is apparently developing a new ad-free monthly subscription service.

TikTok is currently testing the ad-free tier in one English-speaking area outside the United States, according to TechCrunch. The package will cost $4.99 per month and will not include the advertisements that TikTok uses to generate cash. Android Authority initially noticed a code in the TikTok app indicating that it was testing an ad-free plan.

However, the company told TechCrunch that the test is not yet available everywhere and may not be launched. The software currently provides free access, so if participants don’t see enough value in a paid membership, the trial may end without a global launch. According to user feedback, an ad-free version would be appreciated by many users who are annoyed by the number of adverts that interrupt their video feeds.

TikTok, like every other social media network, relies on advertising to stay afloat, and has done so since its inception in 2016. According to a Business of Apps analysis, the app produced $9.4 billion in sales last year.

It is now attempting a new revenue generation strategy by appealing to subscribers who want to watch films without being interrupted by commercials. This year, the app has 1.7 billion active users, and the Business of Apps estimates TikTok will have two billion by 2024.

Although charging for membership privileges is nothing unusual in social media, it is a first for TikTok. Snapchat released a Snapchat Plus for $3.99 in 2022, followed by Twitter later that November. According to The Wall Street Journal, Meta is considering charging European customers $14.99 for an ad-free version of Instagram and Facebook if they do not agree to let the business utilize personal data for targeted adverts.
