The conservatorship of a Tennessee couple over ex-NFL lineman Michael Oher will be terminated after Oher petitioned the court last month, accusing the couple of profiteering on his name and duping him into believing they had adopted him.
KEY INFORMATION
Judge Katheleen Gomes announced in a virtual court appearance on Friday morning that she would end the nearly 20-year conservatorship that Oher believes brought riches to the couple, Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy, following the publication of the best-selling book The Blind Side and its Oscar-winning film adaptation.
The Tuohys were presented as saviors to the young Oher in the book and film, sheltering and assisting him in his football career and eventually adopting him—but they never did.
Gomes kept the case open, and Oher demanded that the Tuohys account for all proceeds from the conservatorship.
Oher is a former NFL lineman who played for the Baltimore Ravens, Tennessee Titans, and Carolina Panthers. He also attended the Tuohys’ alma mater, the University of Mississippi.
Forbes sought feedback from both sides’ attorneys as well as the Shelby County, Tennessee, Probate Court clerk.
“I cannot believe it got done,” Gomes says of the conservatorship, according to the Associated Press, adding that she had never seen one made for someone who wasn’t disabled in her 43-year career.
IMPORTANT BACKGROUND
Instead of adopting him, as many viewers believed after watching the film, Oher said the Tuohys duped him into signing conservatorship documents he mistook for adoption papers. The Tuohys were allowed to make medical and educational decisions for Oher as co-conservators, and Oher could not accept contracts without their agreement. According to the pair, they entered the conservatorship to assist Oher in obtaining a driver’s license, college acceptance, and health insurance. They stated that they were not in it for personal gain, that they would not oppose it if Oher chose to end the conservatorship.
