Amazon intends to invest $4 billion in Anthropic, an AI startup that will compete with Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Google. Here’s the most recent.

Amazon says it will invest $1.25 billion in Anthropic, which maintains an AI-powered chatbot capable of interpreting text and speech. Amazon can increase its total investment in Anthropic to $4 billion. Anthropic claims it will raise up to $5 billion over the next two years to build up its chatbot Claude Next, which is expected to be 10 times more powerful than today’s AI.

According to Anthropic, solving this problem will necessitate billions of dollars in spending over the next 18 months. Microsoft has poured over $13 billion into OpenAI over the previous three years, so this should come as no surprise.

Anthropic will employ Amazon’s AWS as its primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads such as safety research and future foundation model development as part of this new investment deal. Anthropic claims it will build, train, and deploy its future foundation models using AWS Trainium and Inferentia chips.

“We have tremendous respect for Anthropic’s team and foundation models, and believe we can help improve many customer experiences, short and long-term, through our deeper collaboration,” states Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon.

“Customers are quite excited about Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s new managed service that enables companies to use various foundation models to build generative AI applications on top of, as well as AWS Trainium, AWS’s AI training chip, and our collaboration with Anthropic should help customers get even more value from these two capabilities.”

“We are excited to use AWS’s Trainium chips to develop future foundation models,” says Anthropic Co-Founder and CEO Dario Amodei. “Claude has seen significant organic adoption from AWS customers since announcing our support for Amazon Bedrock in April.” We can open new opportunities for enterprises of all sizes by considerably expanding our cooperation, as they deploy Anthropic’s safe, cutting-edge AI systems alongside AWS’ top cloud technology.”
