Simon Cowell wishes he had started therapy 20 years ago after suffering from depression and failing to seek help.
Simon opened out about his own mental health and why he hopes he can now assist others as the first guest on British newspaper the Mirror’s new Men in Mind podcast.
Simon, who was called Mr Nasty as a TV talent show judge, has previously dismissed the notion of his sour attitude.
And he’s now revealed more of his actual self than ever before.
“When I see my friends, the first thing I talk about is how therapy has had this super positive effect on my life,” Simon explained to journalist Tom Bryant. “I wish I had done this ten or twenty years ago… it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.”
“I’ve suffered from depression over the years… but I just thought, ‘Well, that’s my character trait.'” I’m down,’ and it’s something you have to cope with.”
However, the Covid-19 pandemic served as the impetus for the 63-year-old to seek treatment for his declining mental health.
After seeing close friends fall very ill with the lethal illness, the X Factor founder became concerned that he, fiancée Lauren Silverman, and their nine-year-old son Eric would also become ill.
“I had no idea whether it was true or not; all I knew was that I was terrified of catching it.” “I was terrified,” he admitted.
“How do I feel about it now that things have calmed down a little and it’s almost like I have to go from there back into the real world?” So I started reading up on things and teaching myself. Then, thankfully, I ran into some acquaintances who had profited from treatment. That’s when I realized, ‘You know what? I’ve taken good care of my body with nutrition and exercise throughout the years, but what have I done for my head and mind?”
