Ron Cephas Jones, well known for his role as William Hill on the hit television show This Is Us, has died. He was 66.

“Beloved and award-winning actor Ron Cephas Jones passed away at the age of 66 due to a long-standing pulmonary issue,” said the actor’s representative in a statement. “Anyone who had the good fortune to know him felt his warmth, beauty, generosity, kindness, and heart throughout his career.”

Jones, who was born in Paterson, New Jersey, originally planned to study jazz but shifted to acting in college. However, it would be some years before he began to win jobs on stage in New York, having previously worked as a bus driver in Los Angeles.

Jones’ film and television credits include Law & Order, New York Undercover, NYPD Blue, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, The Blacklist, Banshee, Mr. Robot, The Get Down, and Luke Cage, as well as his most recent appearance in Apple TV+ series Truth Be Told.

Half Nelson, Across The Universe, He Got Game, Sweet And Lowdown, Titus, Venom, and Dolemite Is My Name are among his film credits.

But it is as William Brown in This Is Us, the father who gives up his son Randall for adoption only to reunite years later (while suffering from cancer).

Sterling K. Brown, who played Cephas Jones’ onscreen son in the series, paid tribute on Instagram.

In real life, Cephas Jones is survived by his daughter, Blindspotting actor and Hamilton theatre veteran Jasmine Cephas Jones.
