Fans of Lionel Richie in New York were forced to wait a few days before hearing him say “Hello,” and they aren’t happy about it.

On Saturday, Earth, Wind & Fire were scheduled to perform at Madison Square Garden as part of their Sing a Song All Night Long tour.

Richie’s jet, which had arrived from Boston that evening, was unable to land in the New York region due to bad weather. At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, one hour after the event was supposed to start, Richie, 74, sent an apology to social media, expressing his “so bummed”ness about the circumstance.

All tickets will still be honored, and refund requests can still be made through Monday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Fans, however, voiced their displeasure on social media by complaining about the difficulty and late notice.

@howdy_imjack on X, formerly Twitter, replied to Richie’s tweet with, “Thank you very much for announcing this an hour after the event was meant to start,” while @spaceforcetimes added, “Sounds like awful planning on your part, @LionelRichie, trying to fly in at the last minute. Please issue a refund; no thanks for Monday.

Many viewers questioned why a seasoned performer with years of touring experience would arrive at the venue so close to the start of the event. The night before their scheduled appearance at The Garden, Richie and EWF performed at Boston’s TD Garden.

Other concertgoers who made the trip to New York complained that they were disappointed they couldn’t make the new date.

Beginning on August 4 in St. Paul, Minnesota, and ending on September 15 in Los Angeles, respectively, is the Sing a Song All Night Long tour.

Richie, whose voice is behind such legendary hits as “Dancing on the Ceiling,” “Stuck on You,” and “All Night Long,” as well as his celebrated stint with the Commodores, whose hits include “Easy,” “Sail On,” and “Still,” is also maintaining his residency in Las Vegas. Six performances of Lionel Richie: King of Hearts will take place in October at Wynn Las Vegas’ Encore Theater.
