According to Nicolas Cage, being in his mother’s womb was the first memory he ever had.
The 59-year-old participated in The Colbert Questionert during a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, when Stephen asked him a number of quick-fire questions, including what his “earliest memory” is.
“Let me think,” the National Treasure actor replied. I know this sounds extremely out there, and I’m not sure if it’s true or not, but occasionally I feel like I can travel back to when I was a fetus and felt like I could, say, see faces in the dark or something.

He said, “I know that sounds powerfully abstract, but that somehow seems like maybe it happened.”
When challenged about this claim, Nicolas said, “Now that I’m not a fetus, I would have to imagine it was maybe vocal vibrations reverberating through to me at that point. That dates back a long time.
“I don’t even know if I remember being in utero,” Nicolas finally said, “but that thought has crossed my mind.”

The Colbert Questionert footage, which the actor appeared on in April to promote his comedy-horror film Renfield, has only now been made available online.
