In 2024, the legendary R&B and funk group Kool & The Gang will mark 60 years in business. However, the group is releasing a new album and will be starting an international tour before accomplishing that amazing feat.

The release of People Just Wanna Have Fun is scheduled for July 14, at the conclusion of their 17-city tour.

Robert “Kool” Bell, a founding member, released a statement on the upcoming album, which has been in the works for five years. “There are funkier tracks, jazzier tracks, and a couple ballads on there. Then there are songs that transition into a pop style,” he said. “We jump immediately from the 1970s through the 1980s to the present. We’ve kind of captured both new school and old school here. People have enjoyed our music over the years. Thus, I’d say that this album pretty much sums everything up.

George “Funky” Brown, a fellow founding member and LP producer, gave perspective on the procedure during the pandemic’s peak. Everything is done live. Nothing arrived by air. We double-checked that we had the ultraviolet lights, sprays, and masks. Nobody fell ill. We drastically reduced the amount of people in the studio, the 74-year-old said.

“Let’s Party,” the album’s lead track, debuted back in October, but an Afrobeats remix will debut on April 21. This project—the band’s 34th album—is seen by Bell and Brown as the “summation of their long career” because it represents some of the last work done by the band’s members, Ronald “Khalis” Bell and Dennis “D.T.” Thomas, who passed away in 2020 and 2021, respectively.

The group has won two GRAMMY Awards, seven American Music Awards, a BET Soul Train Lifetime Achievement Award, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame since their founding in 1964. In addition, Kool’s bass guitar can be seen in the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC, and their 1980 hit song “Celebration” will be added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress in 2021 along with Janet Jackson’s Control, Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade,” and Nas’ Illmatic.

Known as the “Kool and the Gang Rock the World Tour,” it will stop in a number of important destinations, including Mexico City and London as well as Los Angeles, Orlando, and Las Vegas. Tickets are available here.
