A black teenager who accidentally rang his doorbell and was shot by an 84-year-old Missouri man has turned himself in, according to authorities.

According to the prosecution, Andrew Lester has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal activity.

Ralph Yarl, 16, who is black, was allegedly shot once in the head and once in the arm last Thursday night by Mr. Lester, a white man. The young man lived.

A prosecution claimed that there was a “racial component” to the shooting.

The alleged racial bias is not detailed in the prosecution documents, and Mr. Lester has not been accused of committing a hate crime.

The sheriff’s office informed the BBC that he will stay at the Clay County Detention Center until his arraignment or until he pays a bond.

The adolescent said that last Thursday night, while going to pick up his younger twin siblings, he accidentally approached Mr. Lester’s house on Northeast 115th Street rather than Northeast 115th Terrace, which is one block away.

Mr. Lester shot Ralph twice, once in the forehead and once in the arm, when he rang the doorbell. Mr. Lester, who told investigators that he thought he was defending himself from a confrontation, has not denied shooting the youngster.

The teen’s family claimed that he asked for assistance from three surrounding households before receiving it.

Ralph’s mother Cleo Nagbe informed CBS News on Tuesday that her son had left the hospital and was now at home with a group of medical experts. He should make a full recovery.

Police first kept Mr. Lester for interrogation before releasing him, setting up Sunday protests across Kansas City.

Mr. Lester was charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action on Monday, according to prosecutor Zachary Thompson. He might receive a life sentence if found guilty.
