Austin Butler is moving to produce his next starring role, which, if it works out, could be the start of a new franchise.

Butler has already racked up work with some impressive directors and an Oscar nomination for a challenging performance channeling one of the most recognizable music icons in history via Elvis. In the adaptation of Don Winslow’s City On Fire books, he will play the main role.

The series centers on two criminal empires—one Irish and the other Italian—that rule all of New England. The first, self-titled book was released in 2022, and the second one will be out on April 18. A brutal conflict breaks out after a modern-day Helen of Troy incident splits them apart. Butler wants to portray Danny Ryan, the primary character, who must transform from a street soldier into a merciless leader in order to defend his loved ones, his friends, and his house. Danny plans to create a dynasty or perish attempting while battling the Mafia, the local police, and the federal government.

Along with Elizabeth Gabler and Marisa Paiva from the company, David Heyman and Shane Salerno are producing the movie with support from Sony.

Winslow remarks, “Like so many people all over the globe, I was awestruck by Austin Butler’s Oscar-nominated performance in Elvis. “I’ve had several conversations with Austin about this trilogy that I’ve been working on for nearly 30 years of my life, and I’ve been deeply impressed by his commitment to playing Danny Ryan as well as his passion to also produce the three films with David and Shane and Elizabeth and Marisa,” the actor said.

Butler’s upcoming projects include Dune: Part Two, which hits theaters on November 3, and Masters Of The Air, from the Band Of Brothers/The Pacific production crew.
