One person was killed and numerous others suffered severe injuries when a roof collapsed during a Morbid Angel performance in Belvidere, Illinois.

While the heavy metal performance was going on, storms tore through the area, causing the roof to collapse on the concertgoers. The Joliet performance by Morbid Angel on Saturday night has been postponed. The statement opens, “On behalf of Morbid Angel, we want to offer our deepest and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the individual who sadly lost their lives last night in the venue roof collapse due to strong winds from a tornado.

“Last night, we lost a brother in metal, and this tragedy left many people wounded and injured. We want to say how grateful we are to everyone who was present for helping to get people out and to safety. We are working to reschedule tonight’s performance in Joliet, Illinois, to April 5 as a consequence of what happened last night. Having said that, our attention is still on the storm’s casualties.

The set fall took place at the century-old Apollo Theatre about thirty minutes into the performance. There were only 260 individuals present when the roof collapsed. You can watch a footage of the collapse’s aftermath and concertgoers clearing debris and rescuing people from under the toppled roof.

Just as the death metal band Crypta finished their performance, a storm blew in. Although the band’s touring RV sustained significant damage during the storm, all of the musicians were deemed secure. At least five more people were taken to hospitals for treatment of their wounds while one individual died. According to the Fire Chief, 18 additional people suffered minor injuries. Just 75 miles north of Chicago, the storm erupted, and it pounded the city with winds that could reach 90 mph at points.

“What occurred is absolutely horrific. “This damage to the Apollo Theatre, one of the area’s historic sites, is just heartbreaking,” said Dave Vella, an Illinois state representative.
