On Sunday’s final audition show of American Idol, a familiar face took the judges off guard. Kaya Stewart, a 22-year-old singer, joined her renowned father Dave Stewart, one half of the Eurythmics, on stage and provided backup guitar.

Oh, hold on, what? As the 70-year-old British musician entered the room, adjudicator Lionel Richie exclaimed. “Who do you say is the backup musician?”

Oh my goodness, blast from the past, said Katy Perry.

Richie stated, “We were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame together [in 2022], and it was an evening that we will never forget.” Richie and Dave recently experienced a significant moment together.

Kaya clarified that she wanted to try out for Idol because the program allows for the use of original music. She performed “This Tattoo,” an original composition that she and her well-known father co-wrote, during her audition.

Dave remarked, “This is much more difficult than being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” following his daughter and father’s audition.

The GRAMMY winner remained silent as the judges praised his daughter’s stage appearance and vocal prowess while giving her feedback.

Finally, they all concurred to dispatch Kaya to Hollywood.

ABC broadcasts American Idol on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
