Reese Witherspoon Is 'Upset' About Her Divorce From Jim Toth: 'She Never Saw Herself Getting Another Divorce'

Reese Witherspoon had no intention of getting divorced again.

The 47-year-old Oscar winner announced on Friday that she and her spouse, Jim Toth, whom she married in March 2011, are divorcing. Witherspoon and Toth, both 52, have a 10-year-old boy named Tennessee. She also has a daughter named Ava, 23, and a son named Deacon, 19, with her ex-husband Ryan Phillippe.

“Reese is clearly upset and frustrated. She never imagined getting divorced again, according to an insider. They are focused on Tennessee because they adore it. They will carry on peacefully co-parenting. There is no tension.

“After Jim and she were set up, their romance developed rapidly. Reese was delighted by his interest and eager to wed him, continues the source of the couple. But they are two very distinct individuals. Reese is determined and stubborn. Even though he works very diligently, Jim is more laid back.

The source continues, “Reese has had a very difficult time getting to this stage. They both decided that this was the best move for them.

Before collaborating on the 1999 film Cruel Intentions, she and Phillippe, who is now 48, started a private relationship. Eventually, they were wed in June 1999, and they separated in 2006. Later, Phillippe referred to the breakup as “the worst time of my life.”

Following her breakup with Phillippe, Witherspoon claimed on CBS’ 60 Minutes in 2014 that it had been a “tough year” and that she had “spent a few years just trying to feel better.” She continued by saying that her work had also been impacted by the difficulties she was experiencing in her personal life at the time of the divorce.

She said at the time, “You can’t really be very inventive when you feel like your brain is scrambled eggs. “I was just kind of struggling professionally. I wasn’t producing items I was enthusiastic about. Furthermore, it was abundantly obvious that the public was not responding to anything I had to say.

When Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal’s relationship ended in 2009, they both attended a party at a friend’s house where they encountered Toth, who was working as a talent agent at the time.

Witherspoon and Toth released a joint statement on Friday in which they said “a great deal of care and consideration” went into their “difficult decision” to divorce.

They said, “We have had such a great time together for so many years, and we are going forward with deep love, kindness, and mutual respect for everything we have made together. As we proceed with this new chapter, our son and our complete family are our top priorities. These issues are deeply emotional and never simple. We sincerely value everyone’s consideration for the privacy of our family at this time.
