'John Wick 4' Opens To $8.9 Million In Thursday Previews

With massive $8.9 million in advance sales, Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 exploded at the Thursday evening box office.

The fourth entry in the popular Lionsgate action series is anticipated to debut with a domestic box office debut of $65 million to $70 million, easily outpacing the competition, including holdover Shazam! The Gods’ fury.

As the skilled killer known as Baba Yaga, Keanu Reeves appears in the film once more.

The largest domestic opening of the series so far belongs to John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum from 2019, which earned $5.9 million in Thursday previews (not adjusted for inflation).

There are many things working in John Wick 4’s favor: Reeves is as well-liked as ever, and reviewers adore the film. It currently has an outstanding 96 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest rating of any John Wick movie. (the three previous pics all hovered in the mid-to-high 80 percent range). One difficulty is that John Wick 4 has fewer showings because it runs just under three hours.

The action franchise’s trademark mayhem, brutality, balletic physicality, and morbid humor are all present in abundance in Chad Stahelski’s direction of the movie. Along with the late Lance Reddick, who passed away earlier this month, the ensemble also includes Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, Rina Sawayama, Ian McShane, and Donnie Yen. Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and Stahelski directed the movie.

The film makes its international premiere this weekend in 71 countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, France, Italy, Spain, and Mexico.

Nearly $590 million has been made at the international movie office thanks to the lucrative Lionsgate franchise. That sum ought to be close to $700 million by Sunday. John Wick earned $86.1 million worldwide, $174.3 million with John Wick: Chapter 2, and $328.3 million with John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum.
