Since leaving Saturday Night Live to pursue a profession in acting and moving into movies, Adam Sandler has collaborated with a stable group of actors.

When Sandler was awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor at the Kennedy Center, those pals showed up to celebrate.

Among the celebrities who showed up Sunday night in Washington to share memories of working with Adam Sandler over the course of a career spanning three decades and more than 80 TV and film titles were Dana Carvey, Chris Rock, Steve Buscemi, Conan O’Brien, Drew Barrymore, and Jennifer Aniston.

“So many wonderful. Amazing individuals have flown to Washington, D.C., to compliment Adam Sandler. Have you ever thought about why so many of Adam’s friends were available to talk tonight, though? I’ll explain why. Because they don’t function when Adam isn’t working, O’Brien said.

The award, which recognizes a person who has significantly influenced humor each year, has gone to Sandler for the 24th time. Jon Stewart was the honoree the previous year.

Although Sandler, 56, was raised in Manchester, New Hampshire, he was born in Brooklyn, New York. He performed as a cast member on Saturday Night Live from 1990 to 1995 after receiving his degree from New York University.

The comedies Billy Madison (1995), Happy Gilmore (1996), The Wedding Singer (1998), The Waterboy (1998), Mr. Deeds (2002), 50 First Dates (2004), and Grown Ups were among Sandler’s later film roles. (2010). Critics frequently derided Sandler’s comedies, but in later years, he appeared in highly regarded thrillers like 2019’s Uncut Gems and the 2022 Netflix film Hustle.

Netflix extended its agreement with Sandler for four additional movies in 2020, with an estimated $250 million budget. 2014 marked Sandler’s initial signing with the service.

Judy Sandler, the actor’s mother, and Jackie Sandler, his wife, also paid homage to him. Buscemi, a lifelong associate, expressed his appreciation for their friendship.

No one has taken better care of me in this industry than you, Buscemi said, and no one makes me laugh like you do. For all of his pals, he does this. He has helped so many individuals in this way. However, I believe that simply getting to hang out with you, friend, is the best part of working with Adam and with you.

Ben Stiller, Luis Guzman, Drew Barrymore, and Aniston all recalled their experiences working with Sandler.

Before the performance, Barrymore remarked, “Adam can go to the deepest depths, but he manages to do it without alienating people, and that is a real art, as far as comedy is concerned.

“As I look at this goofy award I’m holding, I just can’t help but think this just may be the weapon used to bludgeon me, by an angry intruder…or Mr. Rob Schneider,” said Sandler, who said he would have liked to attend the event wearing basketball shorts.

Before the show, Sandler informed the media that the honor was one step toward legitimizing his career.

The fact that my family and friends can tell people that goofy man Adam won a Mark Twain award is just a part of my life that I never anticipated happening.

On Sunday at 8 p.m. EDT on CNN, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor presentation will take place.
