Ke Huy Quan Cries As He Becomes SAG Awards' First Asian Male Film Winner: 'It Was A Very Emotional Moment For Me'

As the 2023 winner of the Screen Actors Guild Award, Ke Huy Quan is creating history!

For his portrayal of Waymond Wang in Everything Everywhere All At Once, 51-year-old Quan received the award for outstanding performance by a male actor in a supporting character. He has become the first Asian man to receive a SAG Award for his work in a movie.

Quan thanked Orlando Bloom for the recognition on Sunday night, saying, “Thank you, thank you so much!” I’m feeling really sensitive right now.

He spoke while crying and said, “I recently learned that I would have been the first Asian actor to win in this category if I had won today. I immediately came to the conclusion that this moment no longer belongs to just me after hearing this. Everyone who has called for change also has a claim to it.”

Quan continued to consider a time when he ceased acting.

“Because there were so few chances, I gave up acting, and now we are here tonight to celebrate. Now compared to before, the scenery is completely different. All of you who helped make these adjustments are appreciated. I sincerely appreciate SAG-AFTRA for this incredibly distinguished award.”

The honorable actor, who costarred with Michelle Yeoh, sent his affection to her “I’m so happy that we both began our careers in 1984 because I never thought we’d run into each other on the big screen. Thanks, Michelle. We’d like to thank Jamie Lee Curtis and the rest of the ensemble.”

He concluded by offering advice to aspiring actors: “Finally, I want to urge everyone who is struggling at home and waiting to be noticed to keep going because eventually the spotlight will find you. I appreciate everyone’s support and promise to do the same for you. I’m so grateful, thank you so much!”

The former child star, who also won at the 2023 Critics’ Choice Awards and 2023 Golden Globe Awards for his performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, has now received three awards in as many nights. The Academy Awards have named him for Best Supporting Actor.
