The first show of the new season of American Idol, which premieres on Sunday, will make you cry.

A first glimpse at one of the competitors, Iam Tongi, who wants to get to Hollywood, is unveiled exclusively by ET. It quickly becomes clear from Iam’s opening remarks to evaluators Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie that this isn’t just any audition.

The native of Hawaii, who had been nervously excited to perform for the three moments earlier, revealed as soon as he entered the room that his father had taught him everything he knew about music.

He is the cause of everything, right? In the video, Lionel enquired.

Iam opened up about his father’s passing before becoming noticeably upset. “My dad passed away a couple months ago,” he said.

When he was confident enough to go on, he informed the judges that he would be singing a rendition of James Blunt’s song from this year, “Monsters.” (Blunt’s father has stage 4 kidney disease; the composition was written as a tribute to him.) And that his late father was honored during the show.

Lionel, Katy, and Luke were all touched by Iam’s rendition of “Monsters” as he started to play his instrument and sing. Luke wiped his tears away with a tissue after watching the touching show.

Lionel complimented Iam after his audition for letting the song reflect his spirit and soul.

“You’re going to break some souls, young fellow, if you take this into the world. Your father is very happy, “He reassurance.

Hopefully, Iam’s journey on American Idol is off to a good start.

On Sunday, February 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on ABC, American Idol will resume.
