Philly natives DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince released their iconic song “Parents Just Don’t Understand” on Jive Records on this day at the start of hip hop’s “Golden Era.”

The Fresh Prince, today’s Emmy Award-winning actor Will Smith, who originated the song’s catchy melody from the 1960s popular sitcom I Dream Of Jeannie, describes his incredibly relatable parental situation in the song. The Prince humorously explores what it’s like to have to listen to your parents…and them not listen to you, starting with the clothes his mother selected for the first day of school to borrowing the family car and wrecking it.

The single was successful commercially, earning a Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance at the 1989 Grammy Awards, ranking 96th on VH1’s list of the 100 Greatest Hip-Hop Songs, and appearing in films like The Parent Trap, Malibu’s Most Wanted, and Jersey Girl.

Salute to these two legends for contributing to the status of this music in Hip Hop history!
