The leading roles in the “Girl from the North Country” adaption for the big screen will go to Olivia Colman, Woody Harrelson, and Chloe Bailey.

The movie is written and directed by Conor McPherson, the playwright of the Broadway musical featuring Bob Dylan songs.

The song “Girl from the North Country” draws from Bob Dylan’s extensive discography to establish a Depression-era story about two Midwesterners who meet at a pivotal moment in their lives.

The story takes place in 1934 in Minnesota and centers on a group of travelers as their paths cross in a hotel.

Due to his wife Elizabeth’s (Colman) dementia, business owner Nick Laine’s (Harrelson) situation is getting out of hand. Their adoptive daughter Marianne (Bailey) has a secret that no one can explain, and the bank is encroaching on their house, making the situation worse.

However, when fugitive criminal Joe Scott (Tosin Cole) stays at the inn, a romance blossoms between the two of them that will permanently alter everything.

The Broadway production of the musical shuttered after less than a year due to poor ticket sales after COVID despite receiving favorable reviews.

Dylan also gave “Girl from the North Country” his blessing.

The legendary musician, 81, said: “One of the highlights of my professional life is working with Conor.

“It goes without saying that the man is a genius for organizing this, and I’m delighted to be taking part in the event. My music are in the best possible hands. I started crying at the end of the play. I’m at a loss as to why. I was in awe as the curtain came down. I was, in fact.

“Having Bob Dylan’s trust to tell a story utilizing his unparalleled songs is a wonderful privilege that has brought nothing but joy to my world,” McPherson continued.

But it’s nearly unimaginable how much fun it is to work with this fantastic cast to bring these characters to life.
