The 2023 nominations for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have been revealed. Hip-hop royalty Missy Elliott is among the group.

A Tribe Called Quest, Kate Bush, Sheryl Crow, Iron Maiden, Joy Divison/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine, The Spinners, The White Stripes, and Warren Zevon round out the list of nominations in addition to Missy.

As reported by Billboard On the ballot for the first time are Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, Joy Division/New Order, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes, and Warren Zevon. In their first year of eligibility, Missy Elliott and The White Stripes are nominated.

According to Missy Elliott, “This is a tremendous honor. Being included with all the amazing honorees makes me feel incredibly grateful and humbled. It means so much to me to hear that the music I’ve spent my entire career creating has touched others as well. Nevertheless, to learn that I am the first ever female hip-hop artist to receive a nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?! Wow!! This one strikes extra different because I want to help other female emcees get noticed, so I hope it does that!

Elliott’s manager for more than 25 years, Mona Scott-Young, CEO of Monami Entertainment, noted, “Throughout her career, Missy has shattered barriers and blazing a trail for women in music. This nomination is the most recent in a string of “firsts” that have cemented her status as a key figure in music history and a pioneer of female Hip Hop. I believe that electing Missy Elliott to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the best way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip hop.

Greg Harris, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s CEO, discussed this year’s candidates with Audacy. When discussing Missy Elliott’s candidacy, he said, “Some of the members of the committee shared that if they are putting together a hip-hop homage, fans will regularly ask, ‘Is Missy going to be on the show?'” She is a fantastic songwriter, performer, and producer, and all of the other musicians look to her as a role model. It would be appropriate if she became the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Hall of Fame because she is the total package.
