According to the doctors who have been treating Damar Hamlin at the hospital, he has shown “remarkable improvement” in the last 24 hours.

Doctors at the University of Cincinnati provided an update Thursday, saying Hamlin began to wake up Wednesday night and is communicating with them via writing while still on a ventilator.

According to the doctors, Hamlin even asked them in writing, “Who won the game?”

Dr. Timothy Pritts told Damar that he had won the game — the game of life.

While Hamlin remains critically ill, Pritts said he has made significant progress and it appears his neurological condition and function are intact, as he responds to doctor commands, moves his hands and feet, and holds his family member’s hands.

Hamlin is still critically ill and is receiving intensive care. Both doctors agreed that while he has made significant progress, he still has a long and difficult road ahead of him, but this is a good turning point.

Dr. William Knight, speaking about the significant progress, stated that the immediate recognition and care on the field is what allowed them to share the good news on Thursday.

They confirmed Hamlin did receive one round of defibrillation and CPR on the field before being transported to UC Medical Center’s trauma care department.

“The Bills training staff recognized they had a significant event on their hands and called in an emergency response team, and everything went as smoothly as it could have,” Knight said.

The doctors stated that if Hamlin had not received immediate care, the outcome could have been very different.

Moving forward, both doctors stated that they are only concerned with the “here and now” and are unable to provide definitive answers about Hamlin’s long-term recovery.

“It’s entirely too early to have that conversation,” the doctors said when asked if Hamlin could return to football.
