The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is regarded as one of the greatest sitcoms of all time, and it is credited with catapulting Will Smith to superstardom.

Many fans and sneakerheads remember Will always wearing the newest or hottest Jordans during the episodes during the show’s run from 1990 to 1996. In fact, he wears a pair of Metallic 5s in the first episode and a pair of Columbia 11s in the final episode.

Will Smith recently revealed on a recent episode of Matt Barnes and Steven Jackson’s All The Smoke podcast that he used to beg Michael Jordan to send him pairs before they were released so he could wear them on the show.

“I was immersed in the culture,” Smith explained. “I was literally calling Jordan and saying, ‘Mike, please, please don’t give it to anybody.'” Just let me be the first, I have to be the first to wear it.’ ‘Man, I don’t run that,’ he said.

Smith also claimed he had no idea Nike had released multiple colorways of the Jordan 5 under the “Fresh Prince” moniker. The first pair was released in 2013 and featured the “Grape” colorway without the laces (as Will famously wore them on the show), the second in 2018, and the final in 2020.
