The show, as well as the vacation, must go on. Will Smith’s Oscars slap convinced Jada Pinkett Smith that the family trip to India would not be canceled.
“Will and Jada have taken the family on a pre-planned vacation,” a source exclusively said.
On Saturday, April 23, the Concussion star, 53, was spotted in Mumbai, India. As he smiled for photos with fans, the actor appeared to be in good spirits.
“There had been talk of canceling [the trip], but Jada insisted,” the insider adds.
At the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, the Gotham alum, 50, was the target of a joke that enraged her husband. Chris Rock joked that Pinkett Smith, who suffers from alopecia, looked like she was ready for G.I. Jane 2 with her short hair. Smith stormed onto the stage and slapped Rock. “Keep my wife’s name out of your f–king mouth,” he yelled as he sat back down.
A few years later, the Philadelphia native won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. He apologized in his acceptance speech and on Instagram the next day. He voluntarily resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences a few days later.
“My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were shocking, painful, and inexcusable.” Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home are among those I have hurt. “I betrayed the Academy’s trust,” he wrote at the time, in part.
The Academy also punished the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum, announcing on April 8 that Smith would be barred from attending the Oscars for the next ten years.
“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision,” Smith said at the time in a statement.
“It was in the heat of the moment and it was him overreacting. He and she are both aware of this. “They all agree he overreacted,” a source told Us exclusively earlier this month.
“She doesn’t want to be the center of attention, and she certainly doesn’t want her husband to be the center of attention,” the insider continued. “This was not how she expected the night to unfold — nor did anyone else. He was about to receive one of the most important awards of his life, and the entire night had become about Will and Chris, which neither of them wanted. She hopes they will be able to move on.”
Pinkett Smith has returned to the red carpet, making her first public appearance on April 10 at the Debbie Allen Dance Academy’s grand opening at the Rhimes Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles. Red Table Talk, the Maryland native’s show, returned to Facebook Watch for season 5, and she hinted that the family would eventually unpack the Oscars drama on the show.
“Given what has happened in the last few weeks, the Smith family has been concentrating on deep healing.” Some of our healing discoveries will be shared at the table when the time comes,” Pinkett Smith said in a statement ahead of the season premiere of Red Table Talk on Wednesday, April 20.
“Until then… the table will continue to offer itself to powerful, inspiring, and healing testimonies like that of our incredibly impressive first guest,” the onscreen message continued. “Thank you for coming, Jada.”
Jaden Smith, 23, and Willow Smith, 21, are the couple’s children. Trey Smith, 29, is also the father of the Aladdin actor’s son with ex-wife Sheree Zampino.
