Back in the early 2000s, 50 Cent and G-Unit ruled the game. They were advancing culture, and many brands wanted to work with them. Fif eventually signed a massive deal with Reebok, making him one of the brand’s faces.
He also received his own G-Unit sneaker from the brand. Back in the day, these were huge, and every single G-Unit member wore them. Many people bought into the hype, and it was impossible to avoid these kicks.
Jordan Brand vs. 50 Cent & Reebok
In the early 2000s, Reebok aimed to outperform Jordan Brand in the market. They tried despite the fact that it was always going to be nearly impossible. Reebok CEO Todd Krinsky revealed in an interview with Complex how close the company came to destabilizing Jordan’s empire.
“We were selling 40-50,000 units per color at a time.” “Back to school, we sold 75,000 pairs of one color,” Krinsky recalled. “By the way, I’m not claiming that G-Unit was ever close to Jordan in any way.” I’m saying that at one point in time, in one colorway, I believe we sold nearly as many pairs as the Jordan launch for that time period.” “[50 Cent] was always saying how many Jordans sold this week,” he continued. I swear to you, he asked that every week or every time we had a meeting.”
Even though they were unable to surpass Jordan Brand, they gave it their all. The G-Unit shoes will be remembered for their cultural impact, and Reebok will never forget that.
