Miley Cyrus was already a member of the country great Dolly Parton’s family because she is her goddaughter, but recent Ancestry.com study indicates that the two also have a common ancestor.

The 78-year-old country superstar and the 31-year-old pop diva are linked via a man named John Brickey, according to a genealogy monitoring website that was launched on Monday, September 23. Before passing away in 1806, Brickey, a Tennessee native born in 1740, resided roughly 20 miles from Dollywood, the amusement park owned by Parton.

Parton and Cyrus are seventh cousins, once removed, as Brickey is reportedly Parton’s sixth great-grandfather and Cyrus’ seventh great-grandfather.

Is that accurate? The “Jolene” singer responded to the news in an Access Hollywood interview that was published on Monday, saying, “That’s amazing!” “Miley and I are really close. We should have been at least third cousins ten times removed, in my opinion. I’m sure that will make her smile.

Given that Parton’s new album Dolly Parton & Family: Smoky Mountain DNA – Family, Faith & Fables is scheduled to release in November, the discovery comes at a perfect time. The ambitious production will center on the icon’s maternal and paternal familial lines arriving in the Smoky Mountain region, and it will include performances by family members who span several generations of Parton’s lineage.

Along with the show, Parton is producing an eponymous documentary series that explores her family’s past and features performances captured on camera at Knoxville’s Bijou Theater.

Cyrus and the “9 to 5” singer have a long history of friendship and cooperation. The former made a few appearances on Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana as the latter’s “Aunt Dolly.” Most recently, the two collaborated on a reworked rendition of Cyrus’ smash song “Wrecking Ball” for Parton’s 2023 album, Rockstar. They co-hosted Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party for NBC the same year.
