We have an incredible chart matchup to start the new year.

2025 got off to a great start because this year’s new albums from two industry titans took rather different methods. With Lil Baby and Bad Bunny vying for the top spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, only one of them will be the first chart-topper of the year. In Wham’s case, his latest album is just that—WHAM. It contains a ton of new content that his fans have been anticipating since his last release, It’s Only Me, in 2022. Before this Friday release, Baby created a lot of promotional buzz, provided Young Thug with his first verse since his release from prison, and featured other significant collaborations with artists like Travis Scott and 21 Savage.

As for Bad Bunny, just a few hours ago at the time of writing, the Puerto Rican reggaetón icon released DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS (“I Should’ve Taken More Pictures”). In particular, it highlights Puerto Rico’s distinct character and accomplishments while offering a wealth of sociocultural and political criticism. It is a heartfelt, entertaining, and fervent homage to the archipelago’s rich musical history from African, Caribbean, and Latin American cultures. Chuwi, RaiNao, Omar Courtz, Los Pleneros De La Cresta, and Dei V, other Boricua creatives, also participate.

We are aware that Lil Baby and Bad Bunny’s pride in their own albums is far more significant than any numerical value. However, since it’s really very difficult to compare the two releases, this is a particularly intriguing chart duel. Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio launched on a Sunday (Three Kings Day Eve) with a longer tracklist, a larger fan following, and a shorter tracking period than Baby, who debuted on a Friday for a full tracking week with a deluxe coming out soon. Because of this, this could actually go either way, and both artists deserve recognition for their achievements.

Above all, congratulations to Lil Baby and Bad Bunny for kicking off 2025 with a bang, releasing these excellent tunes, and not being scared to get started. Regardless of whether you’re banging “Dum, Dumb And Dumber” or “PIToRRO DE COCO,” these delights for the new year are really fantastic.
