Some Minions: The Rise Of Gru screenings have barred teenagers in suits owing to a TikTok craze that has led to unruly behavior.
Large groups of young people suspected of upsetting other audience members by making noise and hurling things have been accused of participating in the #gentleminions fad, which entails dressing smartly and attending screenings of the new animation.
On TikTok, videos of people partaking in the trend have in some cases amassed millions of views.
There have been complaints about some people screaming at the screen and throwing popcorn at each other, despite the fact that the bulk of social media posts appear to be devoid of any disruptive behavior.
As a result, some theaters have started enforcing dress codes. One independent theater in Wadebridge, Cornwall, forbids youths wearing suits from seeing a movie.
Guernsey’s only movie theater was forced to cancel all additional showings of the film due to “stunningly terrible behavior,” which included destruction and staff abuse.
Daniel Phillips-Smith, manager of The Cinema, told the BBC: “It’s been extremely sad. Families have left the theater before the movie even started, and the kids have, of course, been in tears. We’ve attempted to help them, but they won’t even look back at the screen.
Phillips-Smith asserted that the theater had seen a “huge” financial effect as a result of the volume of refunds it had given to irate patrons.
“We were attempting to talk to folks on the way in after a while, but it wasn’t really getting anywhere,” a staff member continued.
A staff member explained, “We had to just decide to stop it and say thanks very much, but we’re not doing the entire TikTok trend thing.”
Since it was many people’s first time taking their kids to the movies, we truly wanted to protect them.
A warning notice that read: “Due to recent disturbances following the #GentleMinions trend, any group of guests in formal clothes will be refused admittance for showings of Minions: The Rise of Gru” was seen in other social media posts from Odeon theaters.
Universal Pictures has praised the #gentleminions trend, tweeting recently: “To everyone showing up to @Minions in suits: we see you and we love you.”
Steve Carrell provided the voice for the younger iteration of the title supervillain in the movie Minions: The Rise Of Gru, which debuted in theaters on July 1. A preview of the film was shown to attendees of the Glastonbury Festival on June 24.
