Michael Keaton
By the time Beetlejuice debuted, Keaton had already made his Hollywood debut, but his portrayal of the film’s eponymous undead threat cemented his place in the spotlight. Keaton appeared in the movie Clean and Sober just a few months after the ’80s hit hit theaters, firmly setting his hook into the comedy and drama genres by the decade’s close.
In the 1989 movie adaptation of the comic book and its 1992 follow-up, Batman Returns, director Tim Burton gave his Beetlejuice star another prominent part as Batman. Keaton continued to make regular cameos in movies throughout the 1990s, including Quentin Tarantino’s Jackie Brown and an adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare.
In more recent years, Keaton has acted in critically acclaimed movies like Birdman (2014), for which he won a Golden Globe and earned an Oscar nomination, and Spotlight (2016), which won the Best Picture Oscar. Keaton received three awards in 2022 for his starring performance in the Hulu miniseries Dopesick: an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a SAG.
Sean Douglas, Keaton’s only child, is a child of his ex-wife Caroline McWilliams. Douglas, a Grammy-winning composer and music producer, was only 4 years old when Beetlejuice debuted. At Keaton’s 2016 Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony, he also paid tribute to his father by making a statement.
Alec Baldwin
Baldwin played Adam in the 1988 Tim Burton classic, a man who, after passing away, haunts the house he once shared with his wife, Barbara, and tries to persuade its new occupants to depart. In essence, he is a phantom.
Although Baldwin had already secured a number of parts prior to Beetlejuice, including a recurring part on Knots Landing, the film marked the start of his long-lasting career in both TV and film.
Since then, he has acted in films like It’s Complicated, The Departed, and Glengarry Glen Ross. His portrayal of Jack Donaghy on the television show 30 Rock earned him back-to-back Emmy Awards in 2008 and 2009.
On the scene of his upcoming movie, Rust, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was accidentally shot and killed, and the actor has since had to deal with the fallout from that incident. The actor, who was in possession of the pistol at the time of the incident, was subsequently charged in January 2023 with involuntary manslaughter. He entered a not-guilty plea.
Baldwin and his wife Hilaria Baldwin, whom he wed in 2012, have seven kids together. Ireland Baldwin, whom he greeted in 1995 alongside his ex-wife Kim Basinger, is also his child. Currently, Ireland is anticipating her first child.
Geena Davis
Davis portrayed Barbara, one half of the spectral Maitland couple haunting the Connecticut house in which they are imprisoned, in the 1988 horror comedy. She recently expressed interest in reprising her ghostly part to PEOPLE, but she does have one paranormal worry: She said, “I feel like ghosts don’t age,” in October 2022. How would they justify getting older?
Barbara was just the first of many well-known roles that Davis played. The Accidental Tourist, which debuted only a few months after Beetlejuice, gave Davis the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her depiction of animal hospital employee Muriel. She received a nomination for Best Actress in Thelma & Louise in 1992, but she didn’t receive her next Academy Award until 2020, when she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
With 1992’s A League of Their Own and the rom-com Speechless, in which she collaborated once more with Michael Keaton, this time playing a love interest, Davis maintained her notoriety. The actress portrayed the first female president in Commander in Chief on television, garnering nominations for Emmy and SAG Awards as well as a Golden Globe for the performance.
Davis was married to Jeff Goldblum at the time she worked on Beetlejuice, but the couple divorced the following year. Her first child, daughter Alizeh, was born in 2002 to her fourth spouse, plastic surgeon Reza Jarrahy. (whom she divorced in 2021). Kaiis and Kian, the couple’s twin boys, were born in 2004.
Winona Ryder
Beetlejuice, Ryder’s third film character, would serve as a launching pad for her career in the years that followed, despite her first film role occurring two years earlier in 1986’s Lucas.
In movies like Heathers, Edward Scissorhands (also directed by Tim Burton), Reality Bites, The Age of Innocence, Little Women (1994), and Girl, Interrupted, Ryder appeared after Beetlejuice, in which she portrayed the teenage daughter of the family who moves into Adam and Barbara’s former home.
She and her Beetlejuice co-star Catherine O’Hara returned to Burton’s universe in 2012 to provide voices for the cartoon film Frankenweenie. Ryder most recently appeared in the fifth and final season of the Netflix hit series Stranger Things, which will wrap up in June.
She has remained fairly discreet about her relationships over the years, but she has been seeing Scott Mackinlay Hahn since 2011.
Catherine O’Hara
O’Hara didn’t make her feature debut until the 1980s, by then a well-known small-screen star. She co-starred with Meryl Streep in 1986’s Heartburn and portrayed Gail in Martin Scorcese’s 1985 crime thriller After Hours. In the spooky classic Beetlejuice, played by Catherine O’Hara, Delia Deetz, moved into the haunted house with her husband and Lydia, a gothic adolescent stepdaughter who also saw ghosts.
After her performance as Delia, Burton again used O’Hara’s vocal skills for his stop-motion musical The Nightmare Before Christmas from 1993 and his animated movie Frankenweenie from 2012. O’Hara portrayed the infamously forgetful mother of Kevin McAllister in the beloved holiday film Home Alone and its New York-based sequel.
O’Hara portrayed Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek in recent years. (alongside her longtime friend and costar Eugene Levy). For her depiction of the former soap star whose lavish life is turned upside down by her family’s loss of money over the course of the sitcom’s six-season run, O’Hara won two SAG Awards, an Emmy, and a Golden Globe (among other honors).
Bo Welch and O’Hara first met on the Beetlejuice set, where he was serving as a production director. Matthew and Luke, their boys, were born in 1994 and 1997, respectively, and they got married in 1992.
Jeffrey Jones
Jones had roles in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Amadeus before playing Charles Deetz in Beetlejuice, who moves into Barbara and Adam’s former house with his wife and daughter.
He continued to perform in movies and on television throughout the 1990s and 2000s, including in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow in 1999, but in 2003 he admitted no contest after being accused of forcing a 14-year-old boy to pose for pornographic photographs, according to the BBC. According to the outlet, the actor received a 250-hour community service sentence in 2010 for failing to update his information on the sex offenders register.
Jones made later appearances in the 2004–2006 season of the television series Deadwood as well as the 2019 TV movie that followed.
Glenn Shadix
Shadix’s role as Beetlejuice’s Otho, the interior decorator who assists the Deetz family in remodeling their new haunted home, was his major break. He collaborated with Tim Burton once more in 1993, giving his voice to the animated films The Nightmare Before Christmas and the 2001 science fiction film Planet of the Apes.
Before passing away in 2010 at the age of 58, Shadix made appearances on TV programs like Seinfeld, where he played Jerry’s landlord in season 2, Carnivàle on HBO, and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, an adventure series with mythological inspiration.
