{"id":36946,"date":"2025-01-07T20:29:11","date_gmt":"2025-01-07T20:29:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/radiantmedia.io\/?p=36946"},"modified":"2025-01-07T20:29:12","modified_gmt":"2025-01-07T20:29:12","slug":"metas-fact-checking-partners-say-they-were-blindsided-by-the-decision-to-axe-them","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ec2-34-197-49-85.compute-1.amazonaws.com\/?p=36946","title":{"rendered":"Meta&#8217;s Fact-Checking Partners Say They Were &#8216;Blindsided&#8217; By The Decision To Axe Them"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Meta&#8217;s fact-checking partners claim they were &#8220;blindsided&#8221; by the company&#8217;s decision to abandon third-party fact-checking on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads in favor of a Community Notes model, and some say they are now scrambling to figure out how to fill the funding gap.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;We heard the news just like everyone else,&#8221; says Alan Duke, cofounder and editor in chief of Lead Stories, a fact-checking website that began collaborating with Meta in 2019. &#8220;No advance notice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta&#8217;s decision to no longer use their services was announced in a blog post by chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan on Tuesday morning, along with an accompanying video from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. One editor from a US-based fact-checking organization that works with Meta, who was not permitted to comment on the record, told WIRED that Meta&#8217;s decision &#8220;is going to eventually drain us out.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta did not react to a request for comment on its partners&#8217; complaints or the financial impact of its choice on some groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Meta didn&#8217;t owe fact-checkers anything, but it knows that by pulling this partnership, it&#8217;s removing a very significant source of funding for the ecosystem globally,&#8221; says Alexios Mantzarlis, director of the International Fact Checking Network from 2015 to 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/radiantmedia.io\/2024\/10\/07\/tiktok-joins-the-ai-driven-advertising-pack-competing-with-meta-for-ad-money\/\">TikTok Joins The AI-Driven Advertising Pack, Competing With Meta For Ad Money<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meta&#8217;s partners were also outraged by Zuckerberg&#8217;s claim that fact-checkers had grown overly biased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Duke is disappointed to hear Mark Zuckerberg accuse the groups in Meta&#8217;s US third-party fact-checking program as being &#8220;too politically biased.&#8221; &#8220;Let me verify the facts. We fact-check claims regardless of political affiliation.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/radiantmedia.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/gettyimages-1244644879.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-36950\" srcset=\"http:\/\/radiantmedia.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/gettyimages-1244644879.jpg 800w, http:\/\/radiantmedia.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/gettyimages-1244644879-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 800px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kristin Roberts, chief content officer at Gannett Media, whose publication USA Today was another Meta fact-checking partner, reiterated this position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;Fact-based journalism is what USA Today does best,&#8221; Roberts said in an emailed statement. &#8220;Truth and facts serve everyone\u2014not the right or the left\u2014and that&#8217;s what we will continue to deliver.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of Meta&#8217;s fact-checking partners have said that Zuckerberg&#8217;s accusation of fact-checkers being responsible for excessive censorship on the company&#8217;s platform is incorrect, as fact-checkers simply supplied information and context to posts, leaving the final choice to remove content to Meta itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\"><strong>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/radiantmedia.io\/2024\/09\/26\/ceo-mark-zuckerberg-unveiled-a-slew-of-new-mixed-reality-hardware-and-ai-advancements-at-meta-connect\/\">CEO Mark Zuckerberg Unveiled A Slew Of New Mixed Reality Hardware And AI Advancements At Meta Connect<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;To blame fact-checkers is a disappointing cop-out, and it perpetuates a misunderstanding of its own program,&#8221; says Neil Brown, President of the Poynter Institute, which owns PolitiFact and the International Fact-Checking Network. &#8220;Facts do not constitute censorship. Fact-checkers have never censored anything. Meta was always in control of the situation. Bush, was widely interpreted as an attempt to placate the incoming government, as did Meta&#8217;s decision this week to hire UFC CEO and close Trump ally Dana White to its board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Meta&#8217;s fact-checking partners consider the move to jettison third-party fact-checkers in favor of an X-style Community Notes approach as yet another attempt to placate Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s unfortunate that this decision comes in the wake of extreme political pressure from a new administration and its supporters,&#8221; Angie Drobnic Holan, director of the International Fact-Checking Network, wrote in an e-mail. &#8220;Fact-checkers have not been biased in their work\u2014that attack line comes from those who feel they should be able to exaggerate and lie without rebuttal or contradiction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><a
