Cissy Houston, whose real name was Emily Drinkard and was Whitney Houston’s mother and a fellow singer, has died. Ninety-one. Pat Houston, Cissy’s daughter-in-law, said on Monday, October 7, that she died in New Jersey while receiving hospice care for Alzheimer’s virus.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cissy won a Grammy Award for her music. She started her career in 1938 when she formed the church group The Drinkard Singers with her sister Anne and brothers Nicky and Larry. After that, she joined the band The Sweet Inspirations. In 1969, Elvis Presley and Cissy and the Sweet Inspirations played together in Las Vegas. Van Morrison’s hit song “Brown Eyed Girl” also has vocals from this group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cissy eventually quit The Sweet Inspirations to work on her own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with the New Jersey station WWOR in 2012, after her daughter Whitney died, Cissy spoke out about the loss.<\/p>\n\n\n
